Hiking along the Middle Fork
Hiking around the Middle Fork of the Salmon will not disappoint. Here, you can take in some stunning waterfalls, soak in natural hot springs and observe wildlife. There are ample side hikes from camps along the river and some short ones you can access during breaks from the boats.
Middle Fork of the Salmon Trail
The Middle Fork Salmon Trail follows along the river for 78 miles before reaching Impassable Canyon, which is only "passable" by boat. The trail passes great waterfalls, hot springs, camping areas and feeder creeks, some of which have great fishing spots.
You'll have many of chances to hike during your river trip. There's plenty of daylight left to take in even lengthy hikes after arriving in camp each evening. Your head guide may lead group hikes up to points of interest like Veil Falls or Native American pictographs during the day. Let the guides know what you want to see during your trip and they'll make every effort to show it to you.
Hot springs
There are many soaking opportunities available as you journey down the Middle Fork, which provide a great respite from the chilly water and work wonders for sore feet or shoulders.
Many of these steamy springs are riverside or a short hike from the campsites. Trail Flats is the first hot spring you will encounter. A favorite is Big Loon, which is the deepest and is accessible by four campsites: Shelf, Big Loon, White Creek and Cow Creek. You do have to hike up Loon Creek from the river, but the creek is great for a cold dip after resting in the 110 degree spring. Sunflower is also popular and is about 35 miles downriver from Boundary Creek, but watch out for the poison ivy! Here the water sprays down from the spring making a nice, hot shower.
